Health & Safety Red Tape Reforms

Health & Safety Red Tape Reforms

07 October 2013

Designed to reduce the burden on employers as part of the Government’s Red Tape Challenge, the implementation of a series of red tape cuts has been announced.

The measures include a number of key reforms to health and safety legislation, with employers no longer being held liable for workplace injuries or accidents where they have taken all reasonable steps to protect their employees.

In addition, the mandatory reporting of workplace injuries will be simplified, and employers will no longer be explicitly liable for the harassment of staff by third parties.

Meanwhile, it will no longer be necessary for the Health and Safety Executive to approve the training and qualifications of first-aid personnel.

Company reporting requirements will also be simplified, with many statutory forms being replaced with more flexible systems.

Commenting on the reforms, Michael Fallon, Business Minister, said, ‘For small firms, less time spent filling in forms means more time planning the next project, winning the next contract or looking for the next young recruit’.
